Do you think it’s important to understand God’s purpose for creating the world and us? Do you think it’s important to understand our purpose here on earth? What is our purpose?

These are difficult questions to understand. I’m sure there are folks who can sharply shout out a few quick and simplistic answers. But it’s been my experience…that everyone struggles with them.

In discussing the questions above, we posed and discussed another set of questions during our discussion yesterday morning. They really made me pause and think.

When we think of God, how do we envision or conceptualize Him; how do we see him in our mind’s eye? Some suggested that they see him as a human, not because we think He is human, but because otherwise God is difficult to conceive. Other’s suggested God is a spiritual force, an all-knowing, a “light.”

Others stated that understanding who God is and our connection to Him is a mystery…one that many of us feel compelled and driven to understand. If we don’t understand God’s purpose and how we fit into it, then how do we know what to do on this earth.?

There seems to be plenty of sound bites and one-liners that help us express our thinking, but they always seem so insufficient when we discuss them for deeper meaning.

I often feel like I’m guessing at my understanding of God…and the one that makes “sense” is the one that I run with. I recognize the scripture lends meaning and understanding, but it also tends to bring out more questions too.

Perhaps, if we better understand the life, times, philosophy, and the role Jesus played during His presence on earth is a key to helping us understand God in more human terms.

The scripture says, “God is Love,” (1 John 4:8). Maybe it’s that simple, and that’s what we are to do as Christians.

What do you think?
